Is Your Existing Fireplace Falling Short?

Many traditional fireplaces look inviting but provide limited usable heat. Others are rarely used because they are messy, inconvenient or difficult to operate.

You may be dealing with:

  • Cold air entering through the fireplace
  • Heated indoor air escaping through the chimney
  • A room that stays cold even when the fire is burning
  • Smoke, soot, ash or firewood mess
  • An outdated fireplace that makes the room look dated
  • An older insert that no longer performs properly
  • High whole-home heating costs
  • Uncertainty about which insert will fit
  • Confusion about gas, wood and electric options
  • Concerns about venting, clearances or utility connections

Berkeley Heat can help you choose the right fireplace insert to solve these problems while preserving your existing fireplace opening.

What is a Fireplace Insert?

A fireplace insert is a self-contained heating appliance designed to fit inside an existing fireplace opening.

The insert creates a more controlled firebox within the original fireplace. A decorative surround or faceplate covers the remaining space around the appliance, creating a clean, finished appearance.

Regency Gas Fireplace Insert Gi33

Fireplace inserts are commonly used to:

  • Upgrade an inefficient masonry fireplace
  • Replace an old or outdated insert
  • Convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas or electric
  • Improve the performance of an existing wood fireplace
  • Add more consistent supplemental heat
  • Reduce drafts and heat loss
  • Modernize the appearance of a fireplace
  • Make the fireplace easier to operate

The right insert depends on your fireplace dimensions, fuel preference, heating goals, venting conditions and desired style.

Gas Fireplace Inserts

A gas fireplace insert is a strong choice for homeowners who want convenient heat, realistic flames and easy operation.

Gas inserts fit inside many existing masonry fireplaces and provide consistent, controllable warmth without the work of splitting, carrying or storing firewood.

Benefits of Gas Fireplace Inserts

  • Push-button ignition
  • Adjustable flame and heat settings
  • Consistent supplemental heat
  • No wood, ash or indoor smoke
  • Realistic log and flame presentations
  • Thermostatic remote-control options
  • Variable-speed blowers on select models
  • Natural gas and propane options
  • Traditional and contemporary styles
  • Backup operation during outages on select models

Gas inserts are ideal when you want the comfort and visual appeal of a real flame with less maintenance and more control.

Electric Fireplace Inserts

An electric fireplace insert provides realistic flame effects, flexible installation and easy operation without requiring a gas line.

Electric inserts can be an attractive solution for homeowners who want to update an existing fireplace, add supplemental warmth or enjoy fireplace ambience throughout the year.

Benefits of an Electric Fireplace Insert

  • No gas line required
  • No wood, ash, soot or smoke
  • Realistic LED or LCD flame effects
  • Flame operation with or without heat
  • Adjustable lighting and flame settings
  • Remote-control convenience
  • Lower-maintenance operation
  • Multiple log sets, surrounds and finishing options
  • Flexible 120-volt and 240-volt options on select models

An electric insert may be right for you when atmosphere, design flexibility and ease of operation are higher priorities than high-output gas heat.

Wood-Burning Fireplace Inserts

A wood fireplace insert upgrades an existing masonry fireplace with a sealed, high-performance wood-burning appliance.

Unlike an open fireplace, a wood insert uses a controlled combustion chamber to produce more usable heat from the firewood. A door and viewing glass help contain the fire, while an integrated blower on many models distributes warmth into the room.

Benefits of Wood Fireplace Inserts

  • Strong, long-lasting heat
  • The atmosphere of a real wood fire
  • Greater control than an open fireplace
  • Less heat escaping through the chimney
  • Reduced dependence on central heating
  • Ability to heat without natural gas
  • Reliable warmth during power outages
  • Longer burn times on qualifying models
  • Traditional cast-iron and contemporary styles
  • Renewable-fuel heating when seasoned wood is available

A wood insert may be the right choice when heating performance, energy independence and an authentic wood-burning experience are your top priorities.

Find a Fireplace Insert That Fits Your Existing Fireplace

One of the biggest concerns homeowners have is whether an insert will fit their current fireplace.

Fireplace openings vary considerably. The right model depends on accurate measurements, including:

  • Front opening width
  • Rear firebox width
  • Opening height
  • Firebox depth
  • Hearth dimensions
  • Chimney and venting configuration
  • Gas or electrical access
  • Required clearances

A fireplace insert should not be chosen based on appearance alone. Measurements and installation conditions must be reviewed before a specific model can be recommended.

Berkeley Heat can help you evaluate your existing firebox, narrow down compatible models and select a surround that creates a clean, finished appearance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Over the moon service! We recently purchased and installed a gas fireplace insert through Berkeley Heat, and it was a smooth, flawless transaction from start to finish. The very first day we walked into their showroom close to closing time, Nick went above and beyond by staying late to walk us through the different models. He was incredibly patient and worked diligently to keep everything within our budget. The installer, Moises, and his team were absolutely amazing. They were highly professional, and the finished fireplace looks incredibly sleek! What truly blew us away, though, was their integrity. After the initial installation, Moises didn't feel 100% satisfied with how one element sat. Instead of just leaving it, he took the initiative to come back out and spend another four hours correcting it to perfection. That tells you exactly what kind of team you are dealing with here. If something isn't completely right, they have the conscience and professionalism to come back and make it perfect. They won't just leave you high and dry to rush off to the next job. I would highly recommend Berkeley Heat to anyone. Great prices, a quality product, and unmatched customer service!

The Berkeley heat team generously referred me to their builders they worked with even though I didn’t buy a sauna from them. This did an amazing job installing the auroom Mira kit so I wanted to leave a positive review for both the Berkeley heat team and the builders (Vadim and Roman) who were awesome, highly detail oriented, and very thorough.

We had fireplaces installed from Berkeley heat in 2022. While it was a little tricky and took a while to get the right parts, the end result was fantastic. They also were wonderful with service a few years later when a piece got damaged.

We got our hot tub last year form BH. We had a smooth experience with all our questions answered. They recommended installers and an electrician. I've been in a few times the past year with random questions and they are always cool to answer(eventho they are quite busy). I recently had a part that snapped off(a mystery) and they just handed me a new part that installed myself. easy peasy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fireplace Inserts

Can I install an insert in my existing fireplace?2026-07-31T23:22:03+00:00

The majority of masonry fireplaces can accommodate an insert, but the opening dimensions, chimney, venting, hearth and clearances must be evaluated first to determine what insert is the best fit for your space.

What is the difference between a fireplace and a fireplace insert?2026-07-31T23:24:08+00:00

A fireplace is a complete firebox and venting system. A fireplace insert is an appliance installed inside an existing fireplace opening to improve its heating performance, operation or appearance.

Which type of fireplace insert produces the most heat?2026-07-31T23:24:28+00:00

Wood and gas inserts generally provide more supplemental heat than electric inserts. Actual output varies by model, fuel, room size, home insulation and installation conditions.

Is a wood insert more efficient than an open fireplace?2026-07-31T23:24:53+00:00

A sealed wood-burning insert is generally designed to produce and retain more usable heat than an open masonry fireplace. It also gives the homeowner greater control over the combustion process.

Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas?2026-07-31T23:25:16+00:00

Many masonry wood-burning fireplaces can be converted using a properly sized gas fireplace insert. The chimney is commonly used to accommodate the insert’s approved venting system.

Can I continue burning wood with a fireplace insert?2026-07-31T23:25:41+00:00

Yes, when a code-compliant wood-burning insert, such as a Regency wood insert, is installed. A gas or electric insert would change the fireplace to the selected fuel source.

Do wood fireplace inserts need a chimney liner?2026-07-31T23:25:58+00:00

Wood inserts typically require an approved liner that connects the appliance to the chimney termination. The exact liner and installation requirements depend on the insert, chimney and local code.

Do fireplace inserts require electricity?2026-07-31T23:26:15+00:00

Electric inserts require household power. Gas inserts may use electricity for their blowers, lighting or controls, although select models offer backup ignition. Wood inserts can produce radiant heat without electricity, but the blower will not operate during an outage.

Can I use a wood insert during a power outage?2026-07-31T23:26:46+00:00

Yes. A wood insert can continue producing radiant and natural-convection heat without electricity. Any electric blower attached to the unit will not operate unless backup power is available.

Are wood-burning inserts allowed?2026-09-23T22:04:28+00:00

Wood-burning appliance installation and operation may be affected by regional air-quality regulations, local permitting rules and seasonal burn restrictions. The proposed appliance and installation location should be reviewed before purchase.

How often does a wood insert need maintenance?2026-07-31T23:27:22+00:00

Ash should be removed as needed, the door gasket and firebox should be checked regularly, and the chimney and liner should be inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional. Frequency depends on usage and fuel quality.

What type of wood should I burn?2026-07-31T23:28:58+00:00

Burn only properly seasoned firewood approved for the appliance. Wet or unseasoned wood produces less heat and can increase smoke and creosote buildup.

Can an electric insert heat a room?2026-07-31T23:29:12+00:00

Electric inserts can provide supplemental heat, but output is limited by the electrical supply and model. They are often selected primarily for ambience and convenience.

Will a fireplace insert stop drafts?2026-07-31T23:29:38+00:00

A properly installed sealed insert will likely significantly reduce drafts associated with an open fireplace. Results depend on the condition of the fireplace, chimney and installation.

How do I know which size insert I need?2026-07-31T23:30:01+00:00

The front width, rear width, height and depth of the existing firebox must be measured. Hearth size, venting, clearances and surround dimensions also need to be considered.

Can you update the brick or stone around my fireplace?2026-07-31T23:30:18+00:00

Yes. A fireplace insert project can be combined with new tile, stone, mantels, shelving, cabinetry or a more extensive fireplace remodel.
